More Ways to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile

  • You can put a tag line after your last name. There are only 40 characters allowed in the box. I put my first and last name in the first name box so I couldhave more characters in the last name box to put my tag line. Check out My Profile to see what I mean.
  • Your picture should be professional, Personality Portraits did mine. We are working on getting Barrett a new one. (He really needs it)
  • Above your name when you go to your profile is a blue box. It has questions in it that will help you improve your profile, answer as many as you can.

Bear’s Bulletin

Hi this is Bear, hope your week is going great. The new magazine is definitely keeping mebusy with TC driving me crazy. One of smaller tasks I have for TC is confirming her appointments with potential clients. Some of these meetings happen at a 3rd party locations such as a coffee or deli shop. One way to make sure the client has little to no confusion is to embed a hyperlink or map graphic into the email.

However as much as this might help the client and TC it has its possible drawbacks. The biggest one is setting up the hyperlink and forgetting the final step of actually inserting the link whick makes its so the “Click Here” is nothing but words. Biggest piece of advice is always double and triple check your links to make sure they are functional.

Help! Thanks to everyone who has been sending me events and making the calendar the collective spot for all networking events in the Colorado Springs area. So far I have more hours than i wish to count into it and would love it if you would stop and check it out here. We do still want more though so if you could email me events you are holding, or know of, to office@go2tc.com and I would be glad to put them on the calendar.

Are you on LinkedIn and are you using it?

Many people don’t truly understand the power of LinkedIn. So over the next few weeks I will be emailing you ideas and tips on how you can take your LinkedIn usage to the next level. Each week I will give you one thing to do that will make you much more effective.

First things first

Why have a profile? Many people look you up before they decide to do business with you. They don’t just check your website. LinkedIn shows them who knows you and who you know.

I would suggest that before you meet with anyone, whether for coffee or for a sales presentation, you look them up to see who they know. This gives you great information to make connections and start conversations.

Important things about your profile

Here is an article by Mary Kelly that is a good starting point to make sure your profile is filled out completely. It is important to complete it to what LinkedIn considers 100%. One of the challenges I had was that LinkedIn would not give me 100% because I did not go to college and did not have anything to put in education. So finally I put in “School of Hard Knocks” and it gave me 100%. This is so important because it effects your searchability.

Direct2Business Magazine

For those of you who don’t already know I am now  publishing a magazine called “Direct2Business”which will be mailed to 30,000 businesses in the Colorado Springs area.

Check out my website at www.direct2business.com and let me know what you think.

We are putting a calendar of all the networking and business events in Colorado Springs on the website. Email Barrett at office@go2tc.com to get your events included!

Bear’s Bulletin

Hi this is Bear, TC’s new assistant. Well TC has once again given me another project to work on. With TC things are constantly changing and today she only changed my project tasks three times, in about a 20 minute span, which is close to a new record for her.

However she does have some consistency – such as her view on the importance of LinkedIn. TC gave me the opportunity about a month ago to go to a work shop by Patti Serrano where the necessities of a complete LinkedIn profile were made clear. Of course that means I had to set one up and I have been rewarded a number of times by remaking connections I thought I had lost.

Help! I have been charged with making sure the calendar on the Direct 2 Business website has all the networking events in Colorado Springs. So if you could email me events you are doing, or know of, to office@go2tc.com and I would be glad to put them on the calendar.

The Importance of a Good Email Signature

How many emails do you send each day?

One prime piece of real estate is your signature on these emails. Present yourself in a professional manner, but remember it is always important to have fun.

1. Have all your information in your signature.

Be sure that it is current!
Including your picture is a good way to remind people who you have just met who you are.

2. Make it fun and memorable.

Add a quote, fun fact, or something about you that makes people smile. I like to change mine out every month or so.

3. Make it look great!

Definitely suggest you have a professional design the graphic part of your signature if that is not your business. Ellen at Ellen Bryant Design did mine, give her a call and she will design yours for only $40 if you mention my name. One tip from Ellen: make sure you consider how your email recipients will be viewing your emails…a very wide signature could be cut off if emails are viewed on a smart phone!

 Did you know….

Not only does TC treat her cat’s like her grandchildren. (She doesn’t have any grandchildren of her own yet) Her cats are known for being very ”helpful”!

How to Hire an AWESOME Assistant (Like TC’s)

TC suggests contacting a staffing agency, such as 10 til 2, that specializes in part-time placement services. If you need a full-time person, or a very special talent, like getting along with TC – a very special talent indeed, you can put an ad on Linked-In or in Craigslist.

  • TC puts in all her ads to NOT send a resume, but to call first. It helps to have someone else answer the phone that knows you well. Whoever you hire, they will more than likely be answering your phone, or talking with your clients – you need to know how they sound.
  • She doesn’t like looking at resumes, her thought is anyone can pay someone to look good on paper. Resumes are great for people applying to a corporation, TC is more interested in how someone presents themselves.
  • She then asks them to write a couple of paragraphs about who they are, their favorite food, music, etc. and email it right away. This is so she can see if they can compose a decent email.
  • Next she Googles them, if they pass they get interview on the phone by both TC and one of her friends.
  • Pass all these steps and then they get the wonderful opportunity to get interviewed in person.
TC only had to interview one person!

TC’s interview process is definitely a unique experience. I’ve gone on my share of interviews before, and have been exposed to different styles – but none like TC’s (are you surprised? Didn’t think so).

To start, she had her son, Bob, screen all the candidates. During this stage, I was warned that TC had a personality similar to a drill-Sergent. I hear this is where many of the candidates respectfully bowed out, however I was intrigued. I mean, who was this lady!?

Next, came the phone interview. Now, I must say, I think I’m pretty good on the phone. I’ve had phone interviews before….but it’s usually the prospective employer doing the interviewing – not this time! TC had her dear friend Pamela Potter conduct the phone interview. Passed with flying colors (no shock there).

Lastly, came the face-to-face interview. I FINALLY get to meet the woman who I may potentially work for. By this point, I cannot tell you how many times I was reminded that TC had a very “strong” personality, and that not everyone will be a good fit for this position because of it. After hearing the same thing over and over, I was expecting the worse. She is really not that bad, her bark is way worse than her bite.

Well, I must have made a good enough impression, because almost nine months later I’m still here! Oh by the way, I couldn’t be allergic to cats.

TC Is Totally LOST Without Julie!!!

Many people tease TC for having a full-time assistant. They ask her, do you really need her? TC doesn’t know how she’d get along without having someone full-time. Lately, Julie’s been sick and it’s been killing TC – because she has only been able to work a few hours a day.

TC’s belief is that your business completely changes the day you have payroll. Having the responsibility of paying someone else moves your business to a different level in your head. You start focusing on the things that actually MAKE money, instead of busy work.

People forget that you don’t have to hire someone full-time right off the bat. TC starts her assistants out at 5 hours a week, and tell them to figure out how/what they can do to get more hours (Julie was at 40 hours right away). If they can’t figure out how they can help you, get another assistant. That way, you’re only out a few hours of pay, instead of spending 20 hours training someone and realizing that they aren’t proactive.

Click here to check out the Door Hanger TC is having delivered to homes in Colorado Springs. (It’s over 27 inches long!)

Julie’s never worked at a place that’s told her to find her own hours. What does that even mean? It was confusing, but she caught on pretty quick.

What TC wanted was for Julie to be proactive and ask TC to show her things, so Julie could work on her own. Luckily for Julie, TC needed lots of help and she is always really, really busy.

Julie’s wonderful job includes: putting business cards into ACT, designing emails, bugging clients, invoicing, running errands, etc. TC gets to do the fun stuff, like going to lunch, networking, speaking at events, and talking to clients out in the field. Julie even gets to try and read her mind.

TC Says We Need Help!

One of the challenges of writing unique content for emails, is trying to avoid using the same words over and over again. For example, one of the most used words is, “help”. Think how many times we use that word in your brochures, website, emails, etc. Using a thesaurus can be great, however it can be limiting and time consuming.

Develop a list of words that you can use instead. Not only check what the thesaurus says about that particular word, but also check the related words and then put together a cheat sheet. Check out an example of what we use for the word help!

Also, what other words do you think are over used? The English language is amazing! It is quite possible that our language has more words than any other languages – let’s use all of them!

Take a look at the newest emails
TC & Julie have done for their clients!

TC bugs me about being a perfectionist…and I don’t disagree with her. We just operate differently. TC multi tasks, she brainstorms all the time when she is doing other things. I’m more focused on one thing at a time.

For example, while TC was driving to an appointment, she called me to put together this email. In the middle of our conversation, she asked something about a client, then about another appointment later on in the day, then went right back to this content, WHEW!

TC’s mind moves so fast, it’s hard to keep up, you never know what page it’s on, and she expects me to read her mind (I’m actually getting pretty good at that!).

Brainstorming With TC??

Had a wonderful brainstorming session with some awesome women – Molly Lord, Mary Sullivan, Meredith Masse, and Terza Ekholm. It’s amazing what ideas come out when you get different people together. Got some amazing ideas that I will be using right away. This is also what happens when I brainstorm with my clients to create their email content.

Some things I have learned about having a great brainstorming session….

  • I find the best sessions are when the people involved have different personalities and experiences. Diverse perspectives bring fresh views. So invite people who don’t necessarily think like you, or have the same outlook.
  • All ideas are good, however they might not be right for that particular situation. Be sure everyone feels that all sharing is valued. You want there to be a free flowing exchange. One person might bring something up that will not work, however that thought might spark an idea in someone else.
  • If you are going to work on more than one subject for the session, set up a time limit for each subject. For example, we had three hours for the five of us and each person got 30 minutes, so everyone had a turn. Or you can do like my mastermind group, we take turns and dedicate one session to each of us.

Brainstorming with TC…hmmm, what can I say?? TC and I have opposite styles. TC comes up with ideas on the spot – you never know what she will come up with. I like to mull things over and have been known to carry around a notepad with me for weeks – yes WEEKS.

I used to be very “by the book” and had a specific plan that I HAD to follow, no matter what the assignment was or task was at hand. Well, let’s just say since working with TC…things have changed. She loves having systems, however she is always tweaking them. You never know what next week will hold!

Running Your Business With The Power On

Starting off the New Year with great training is important for your business. It’s likesomeone who is trying to cut down a tree – they keep working on it, they work harder, and even harder. However, they are not getting very far. Then, someone points out that if they would just turn their power saw on the tree would go down quicker. (ah-ha moment!) Work smarter, not harder in 2011.

What are you doing to make sure you are using the best tools and ideas available to run your business? Make a commitment this year to get the training you need so that your business can be as effective as it can be.

When looking into training programs…

  • Be sure it’s relevant info that you can use in your business today.
  • The the time is not spent trying to sell you something
  • Don’t forget to network with other participants

An opportunity has come to hear four great speakers (I am one of them) in a short period of time. Promise we’ll bring you value.

Julie’s Joys While Working with TC (or so she thinks!)

Training doesn’t have to be just a seminar – even though TC does plenty of those. It can also being reading a good book, picking someone’s brain, observing, etc. I love to watch TC – she’s quite entertaining. TC says she’s going to give me some “homework” for training…I thought I had put those days behind me, but apparently not!

VERY Direct Marketing is VERY grateful this time of year for all of our wonderful clients & amazing friends!

Here’s a little something we hope makes you smile!

People Pennies

We all have different sizes of containers for our people pennies. Some of us have large containers and others have small containers. For the author of the original story, please go to: People Pennies. Some people give us pennies – ever talked with a dear friend and felt rejuvenated? Others take them from us. Some people suck them up like a vacuum. When low on people pennies, we tend to say or do something stupid. The trick is to watch that you don’t get low. Check your heart and do the things that give you more than enough People Pennies to go around.

Some people need time alone to gather emotional energy…

Listening to music
Reading
Playing video games
Going for a walk or bike ride
Knitting or other hobbies

Some gather more People Pennies, when they spend time with others…

Going to a party
Calling a friend
Going to lunch
Networking events
Starting a conversation with someone they don’t know

FROM JULIE – OF COURSE TC wouldn’t let me go without putting a lawyer joke in here…

Just before the holidays, an honest politician, a generous lawyer and Santa all got into an elevator at a hotel. as the elevator went down to the lobby, they all noticed a $50 bill lying on the floor of the elevator.

Which one picked up the bill and turned it into the front desk?

Answer: Santa of course, the other two don’t actually exist!

And now MY turn…I dedicate this cartoon to TC!

Anyone who believes men are the equal of women has never seen a man trying to wrap a present!

Back from a Tradeshow on Trade, with Tradebank

Tips from TC – TRADING

Just got back from a tradeshow on trade, with Tradebank. How is that for a mouthful? So here are some tips on doing business on trade…

Doing too much trade is one of the mistakes people make. Sadly, few banks will take trade for your car payment. So, know how much trade you can do and still meet your cash obligations.

Use trade to get new customers, you might not be able to get otherwise. For example, when I first started my Colorado magazine (the day after 911 if you can believe that!), one of the places I wanted very badly in the magazine was a local amusement place, similar to Mr. Biggs. Because they were corporate they had already spent their advertising budget for the year, so I agreed to do it on trade. They did so well, that I was in the budget for cash the following year!

Whether you have an empty hotel room, unsold services, unsold inventory, etc., you can convert that to trade. Belong to a trade company so that you don’t have to do a direct trade. You can build trade dollars and use them for things you need. Check out a trade company I belong to! www.tradebank.com

Julie’s Joys While Working with TC (or so she thinks!)

I didn’t even know what trade was before working for TC, but boy was Imissing out! I have received meals, clothing, accessories, makeup, fun novelties to send to my Fiance and his soldiers in Iraq, and most recently (and my favorite thus far) BRAND NEW WINTER TIRES!!

TC likes to joke that she is spoiling me so that I will feel too guilty to ever leave. How sneaky is she?? But, between you and me, she’s doing an excellent job so far!
